What are Blood-Borne Pathogens?Blood-Borne Pathogens are infections, which are transmitted through blood or bloody body fluids (not urine, sweat and typically not saliva). The three main viral blood-borne pathogens are HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C. |

| Prevention |

| Numerous precautions have been developed to prevent potential exposure such as including use of barriers (gloves and/or goggles) when anticipating contact with blood or body fluids, immediately washing hands and other skin surfaces after contact with blood or body fluids, and carefully handling and disposing of sharp instruments during and after use. Safety devices also have been developed to help prevent needle stick injuries such as safety disposal containers and specific placement of containers. |

Post exposure protocols have also been developed through the Centers of Disease Control (CDC). All HealthONE Occupational health clinics have been designated for management of these blood borne pathogen exposures and are trained and equipped.
